- Inter-institutional coordination among state agencies is essential when responding to emergencies within prisons, says Minister of Justice
In line with the island-wide initiative to establish an integrated mechanism across all prisons to manage potential emergencies and prioritize inmate welfare, an integrated mechanism centered on the Wataraka Open Prison Camp was launched on the morning of the 15th at the camp under the patronage of the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.
The Minister emphasized that this committee, formed under the leadership of the Superintendent of the Wataraka Open Prison Camp and comprising officials from various state institutions, should convene at least once every one to two months to review and address the prison’s operational needs.
Explaining the necessity of an integrated framework, the Minister noted that maintaining close inter-agency coordination enables better management during emergency situations.
The event was attended by government officials representing key state bodies—including the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, Fire Brigade, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, and Ceylon Electricity Board—alongside Homagama Divisional Secretary B. A. D. Chinthaka, Superintendent of the Wataraka Open Prison Camp R. S. Mahanama, and other dignitaries.
